What Bonding a Tooth Means
A complete smile makeover isn’t always complicated. Many patients just want a chipped tooth repaired, sharp teeth recontoured, or oddly spaced teeth to look more uniform. In such cases, we may recommend cosmetic improvement with tooth bonding and/or recontouring. Designed to be as minimally invasive as possible, bonding and contouring teeth can significantly improve their appearance.
What Are Tooth Bonding & Contouring?
Bonding a tooth
Cosmetic dental bonding involves adding mass to existing tooth structure. If your teeth need to be wider so that spaces between them are closed, or if you’ve lost part of your tooth to injury, bonding can add structure. We use composite resin, the same material used in tooth-colored fillings, for bonding. Your dentist may suggest that you undergo teeth whitening prior to cosmetic dental bonding because the bonding material is custom-shaded to match the tooth’s color and will not respond to whitening afterward.
Contouring a tooth
Cosmetic tooth recontouring removes tooth structure. A sharp, serrated, or jagged tooth can be smoothed out by gently removing some of the natural tissue. People with a tiny chip or pronounced canine teeth are often good candidates for tooth recontouring. The gentle contouring procedure might also be recommended to smooth a rough patch of enamel on your tooth, or correct other issues to make the tooth blend in with your smile’s overall contour.
