Snoring & Sleep Apnea

Custom Appliances for Snoring & Sleep Apnea

If you snore, your sleeping partner probably complains about it, making it an interruption to sleep for both of you. As a result, you both can also suffer from daytime drowsiness, irritability, lack of concentration and focus, depression, and falling asleep at inappropriate times. For you, specifically, it might also indicate a more serious condition, known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

What Are Snoring and Sleep Apnea?

Snoring is the sound produced by oral tissues vibrating as air passes by. While not all snorers have sleep apnea, snoring can often indicate the condition. The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA. During OSA episodes, soft tissues in the mouth and throat completely block the airway. Swollen tissues, sinus problems, a thick neck, excessive weight, or physical malformations (such as a broken nose) can cause sleep apnea episodes. However, in many cases, relaxed jaw muscles allow the jaw to move slightly backward, and soft tissues get in the way of airflow.

How We Treat Snoring and OSA

The most common medical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is the CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, machine. The CPAP consists of a facemask and connective tube attached to a base unit that emits a continuous stream of oxygen. While CPAP is highly effective for many people, some find that it does not work, or that the mask does not fit properly. The sound of the machine may also interrupt your sleep, negating the purpose of OSA treatment.

As an alternative to CPAP, we offer a simple oral appliance to help alleviate the conditions behind sleep apnea. A sleep guard, worn throughout the night, holds the lower jaw slightly forward to eliminate airflow blockage. The tongue and soft oral tissues cannot get in the way of breathing, so deep REM sleep is achieved, and snoring also stops. If you’d like a more comfortable treatment for your snoring or sleep apnea, or if you know that CPAP won’t work for you, then speak with us about your treatment options.
